Kyokpa

Breaking — a demonstration of technique and power.

Kyokpa is one of the disciplines of taekwondo: breaking various objects to demonstrate technique and power.

As a competitive event, kyokpa is practised all over the world. There are many forms of breaking: individual breaking, group breaking, power breaking, breaking with complex techniques and breaking combined with acrobatic elements.

It is this last form that is becoming more and more popular today: no demonstration is complete without complex acrobatic kicks that break boards.

What matters in kyokpa

The most important elements of kyokpa are technique, power, speed, focus and concentration, flexibility and agility. Correct position and correct movement matter a great deal.

Correct position means the right stance, distance and angle of the strike.

Correct movement means the right use of the body, including the transfer of body weight and the movement of different parts of the body to generate maximum power.

Kyokpa is one of the culminating disciplines that show an athlete’s grade and experience.
